Titanic facts

  • The Titanic was the largest ship in the world in 1912.
  • The Titanic as 882.5 feet long approximately the size of 3 football fields.
  • The ship weighed 24,900 tons.
  • It took 3,000 people and 2 years for the ship to be built.

  • The cost to build the ship was 7.5 million dollars.
  • There was 4 smoke stacks on board, but only 3 were functional. The 4th was added for looks.
  • The Titanic was designed to stay afloat if 4 of the hulls were damaged unfortunately 5 were damamged in the collision therefore causing the ship to sink.
  • Even after the Titanic struck the iceberg the electricity onboard stayed lit therefore making some passengers believe that there was nothing wrong making them return to their staterooms so the lifeboats were notfilled to capacity.
  • The first lifeboat to leave the ship had the ablility to hold 64 people, only 28 were on board.
  • The collision with the iceberg occurred on April 14th at 11:40 pm, on April 15th at 2:20 am the ship sank. It took approximately 3 hours to it to sink.
  • Beliefs are that most of the passengers drowned during the sinking when in fact that most of them died from the icy cold waters of the Atlantic causing hypothermia.
  • The band of the ship decided to stay onboard the ship during the sinking and continued playing trying to calm the passengers.
  • The Titanic lays in her watery grave 12,600 feet at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The ship broke in two pieces during the sinking, the 2 parts lay 1,970 feet apart at the bottom of the ocean.
