Titanic Sinking Survivors of the 19th Century

  • Alden Caldwell was ten months old at the time of the Titanic sinking. Aldens mother was ill and couldn’t hold him in the lifeboat the officers let his father board the lifeboat with his wife and son so  his life was saved. Alden and his parents were rescued and the family was one of the few families that survived the Titanic sinking intact. Alden died in 1992 at the age of 81 in Florida.

  • Eleanor Johnson was 18 months old when she was on the Titanic. Eleanor boarded the Titanic with her mother and brother as third class passengers. Eleanor has admitted that she remembers very little of that night. She did recall the screams and sights of hands of passengers trying to reach the lifeboat that she was on. In 1994 Eleanor went to visit her son in Florida and that was the first time that she had seen the ocean since 1912. Eleanor was the only Titanic sinking survivor that met James Cameron during the filming of the Titanic and she saw the movie three times. Eleanor died in 1998 at the age of 87.
  • Edith Brown was 15 years old when she was on the Titanic her and her parents were second class passengers. Her father was taking them to Seattle to open up a hotel. The Titanic hold had supplies that were to be used at this hotel. Her memories of that night were very vivid. The last thing she remembers about her father was of  him smoking and sipping a brandy on deck. Her father did not survive the Titanic sinking. In 1996 at the age of 99 Edith along with two other survivors took a cruise to the location of the wreck for a attempt was made to raise part of the wreckage. Before leaving the site Edith threw a red rose into the ocean for her father. Edith died in 1997 at the age of 100.
  • Marjorie Newell Robb was the last first class passenger to survive the Titanic sinking. Marjorie was a adult at time of the Titanic sinking at the age of 23. In her later years Marjorie began to speak about her experience of the Titanic sinking. She attended many conventions to tell of her experiences. Marjorie died in 1992 at the age of 103.
  • Eva Hart was seven years when she survived the Titanic sinking with her parents as second class passengers. Her father placed her and her mother aboard the lifeboat and told Eva to hold mummys hand and be a good girl, that is the last thing that her father told her and that was the last time that he saw her father. In her memories of the Titanic sinking she clearly recalls seeing the ship sink. The worst thing that she remembers about the Titanic sinking are the screams. Eva was one of the most outspoken survivors on the subject of the lack of lifeboats aboard, and also at the attempts to salvage the ship. She has stated that the site of the wreckage is a grave site and should be treated as such. Eva died in 1996 at the age of 91.
  • Bertram Dean was one years old when he boarded the ship with his parents and sister. His sister Millvina would eventually become the last surviving passenger of the Titanic sinking until her death in 2009. Bertram died on April 14, 1992 in Southampton 80 years to the day of the Titanic sinking at the age of 80.
  • Ruth Becker was 12 years old when she was a passenger on the Titanic. When they boarded the lifeboats Ruth and her family were separated. Ruth soothe a woman on her lifeboat because the woman had become separated from her baby. Aboard the Carpathia Ruth was reunited with her family and was relieved to see that the woman that she befriended was reunited with her baby. Ruth refused to speak about what happened that night of the Titanic sinking but later on went to events with  other survivors. In 1990 for the first time since the Titanic sinking she took a cruise to Mexico. She died later that year at the age of 90 and her ashes were scattered at sea directly over where the Titanic lies today.
