Capathia

The RMS Carpathia was a passenger steamship that made her maiden voyage in 1903 but became famous by being the ship that rescued the 705 survivors of the RMS Titanic.


On the night of Sunday April 14, 1912 the Carpathia was sailing from New York City to Austria-Hungary. The wireless operator aboard the ship had missed several messages from the Titanic as he was on the bridge at the time. When he finally received the distress messages from the Titanic he awaken his Captain and the ship immediately headed towards the Titanic which was approximately 58 miles away.

At 4:00 am the Carpathia had reached the site of the sinking and rescued the survivors. The crew were given medals for their bravery they shown on the night. The Carpathia was used in 1918 as a vessel to transfer American Troops to Europe. On the morning of July 17,1916, the Carpathia sank as a results of torpedoes fired by a German Navy Submarine. In the year 2000 the wreck of the Carpathia was discovered 120 miles west of Fastnet, Ireland.
